News for now…

Hi all, In addition to selected works from 100 Starting Points... I’ve uploaded some items to my Etsy shop that you might not have seen.  For any purchase inquiries or to buy one that is NOT listed in the Etsy shop please email me at jessicammatier@gmail.com.

This weekend I will have a small original painting for sale at the Art Alliance in Red Bank for their Christmas show. You can buy it and take it home that night. I would show it to you but it’s not quite finished yet. One thing I can tell you is that it’s a little different than what I’ve been making.  As opposed to the raw canvas background it is on white gessoed canvas which has screwed around with my usual process.

I hope you had a splendid Thanksgiving. We went to my mother in law’s and all I had to bring was soda and wine which was nice and easy. It left more time for painting which is always a good thing.

Can’t wait to show you what I’ve been working on. Check my Instagram for updates.

All the best,

Jessica

The Dust of Everyday

Summer is in full swing at the Jersey Shore. Naturally, our little family attempts to avoid our usual local spots and save our visits to the beach for September.  In June I had some errands to run in NYC, and couldn’t let the kids suffer the pain of an hour drive without some treats. We went to Economy Candy and stopped at Schillers, to use the bathroom, but mainly to show the girls where their parents went after tying the knot at City Hall nearly 10 years ago.

The girls were lucky enough to stay with their aunts for the weekend.  John, Henry, and I went to the Museum of Arts and Design and the American Folk Art Museum. If you find yourself in NYC these lesser known art spots are worth a trip and within walking distance to one another.   I love the fashion exhibit that explores the tactile aspects of clothing.  The pieces in the show convey the physicality of dressing in such an accessible way. I’ve always valued comfort over aesthetics and trends.  One would say my wardrobe was not that of a typical Parsons student…

However, this eggplant clutch is a keeper. There was also an exhibit that celebrated the counterculture within fashion during the 60’s and 70’s.  You can definitely see the aftereffects of drugs in the 70’s. Haha! No—really… At this moment in history, the clothes evolved into something slightly beyond strange.

I’m happy to report that all is well in the studio. I’m packing up a few pieces for a show in Asbury Park at Heaven Arts. The opening will be on July 15th, 7-10pm. Please come by and say hi in person!

#100daysofstoicism news: These paintings are in the process of being digitized for my Etsy shop.  I will be releasing them in curated groups throughout the summer. Sale dates will be posted on my Instagram and sent in my newsletter.

Wishing you and your crew a great summer.

With love,

Jessica

The Catskills: Being in Nature

Kaaterskill Falls

Last month I met one of my oldest friends in the Catskills. We stayed at Scribners Lodge which was too hip to quit. It was lovely getting away even if it was only for two nights. In order to regulate myself back to my pre-mothering days, we decided to move at an appallingly slow pace. I loved every moment of it.

Here are photos from our hike to Kaaterskill Falls and random shopping/art things…

I regret not purchasing this…but you can get it in Phonecia, NY.

We ended up going to Woodstock and spent the day in the what seemed like hundreds of shops.  I stopped in a beautiful art spot,  Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild to see The Ritual of Construction curated by Jeanette Fintz.

That’s all for now.

Just in case you don’t know my Society6 shop is up and running. I’ve uploaded most of my #100daysofstoicism series which are now available on mugs, tapestries, phone cases, shirts, and more.  Check it out here.

Bye bye for now.

Winter

starlings movement acrylic paper study

It seems easier to embrace the idea of winter’s introspective quiet stillness when there is a blanket of snow on the ground, keeping you inside with your thoughts. It is the last day of winter break, and there is still no snow in New Jersey. The outside is still buzzing with everyone’s busyness and I have been fighting to stay calm and still.

Remembering, listening, and dreaming of winter.

watercolor paper study

I spent this time with my eyes closed to many things since I don’t have a tolerance for cold.

watercolor paper study

I remember a few terrible winters over the past 7 years.  I was living a much simpler life. This artless existence has given weight to my present work. There is a wider understanding of genuine struggle that has evolved into perseverance and self-reliance.  Remembering those harsh Watertown, NY winters help me quickly plow through most of my discomforts.

During this time there was no room for excuses or giving up. I know the gravity of motherhood, loneliness, and war. It is almost unbearable.

My paintings would not have weight, or real substance, or even a story if it were not for those winters. These paper studies were painted while I was wholeheartedly dreading the holiday season.

This last piece is about how things are not as bad as I thought they would be and today that idea rings with truth.
